When did you decide you wanted your career to be in health and safety and how did you make it happen?
I decided to pursue a career in health and safety in the early 2000s when I recognised the critical importance of creating safe work environments. I started by gaining foundational knowledge and practical experience in safety protocols and procedures. Over the years, I continuously updated my skills and qualifications and decided to take my first NEBOSH qualification, the NEBOSH International General Certificate, in 2012.
Why did you choose to take the NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) in particular?
I chose the IGC because it is a globally recognised qualification that is known to provide a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of health and safety principles and practices. I felt that taking this qualification would significantly boost my expertise and credibility in the field. I felt it was essential for my career progression and to ensure that I could effectively manage health and safety in diverse work environments.
How did you find it?
The course was challenging but immensely rewarding. It provided a solid foundation in risk assessment, hazard identification, and safety management systems. The practical nature of the course allowed me to apply what I learned directly to my work, enhancing my skills and confidence.
How has it helped you?
This qualification has been instrumental in my career. It opened new opportunities, allowed me to take on more significant responsibilities, and positioned me as a credible and knowledgeable HSE professional. It also equipped me with the tools to implement effective safety management systems and contribute to creating safer work environments.
You have nearly 20 years of experience as a health and safety professional. What do you like best about your work?
What I enjoy most about my work is the ability to make a tangible difference in people's lives. Ensuring that workers return home safely at the end of each day is incredibly rewarding. I also appreciate the constant learning that comes from working in health and safety as new challenges present themselves each day. This is a profession that gives you the opportunity to work with diverse teams to solve complex safety issues.
Since 2018, you have been employed as an HSE Manager for Azizi Developments. Can you tell us a little about your role and responsibilities?
As an HSE Manager at Azizi Developments, my role involves developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety programs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards. I conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and training sessions to promote a culture of safety within the organisation. Additionally, I collaborate with various departments to address safety concerns and continuously improve safety practices.
Earlier this year, you completed the NEBOSH International Diploma:
- Why did you choose this qualification?
I chose the NEBOSH International Diploma because it was the natural next step in advancing my professional knowledge and expertise. It is a highly regarded qualification in the HSE industry and provides a deeper understanding of health and safety management, which is essential for senior-level positions.
- How did you find it?
The diploma was intensive and required a significant commitment, but it was incredibly worthwhile. The coursework covered a broad range of advanced topics, including risk management, health and safety strategy, and organisational behaviour, which are crucial for effective HSE leadership.

Completing the NEBOSH International Diploma has further enhanced my capabilities and confidence as an HSE leader. It has equipped me with advanced skills and knowledge to handle complex safety challenges and lead organisational safety initiatives effectively. It also demonstrates my commitment to professional development, which has been recognised by my peers and employers.
When you look back at your career so far, what are you most proud of?

Most importantly, always prioritise the well-being of people and strive to make a positive impact in every role you undertake.
