Case Study: Qasim Murad

NEBOSH Diplomate Qasim Murad is a HSE trainer for GS Inima in Oman. In this interview, Qasim explains why he chose to be part of the health and safety profession and shares his top five tips for anyone with similar aspirations.

You have worked in health and safety since 2013. Why did you choose to join the profession straight out of university, and how did you secure your first opportunity?
I have always been passionate about keeping people safe and well, so this profession is the perfect fit for me. During my university studies, I discovered the critical role health and safety professionals play in workplaces. Through their work and influence they prevent incidents and accidents from occurring which helps keep the workforce safe and well and can ultimately save lives. When I discovered this, I quickly decided to focus my post university job search on finding an opportunity that would enable me to be part of this noble profession. I wanted to make a difference and knew health and safety would give me the chance to do this, ensuring my career would be a rewarding one.

I secured my first opportunity by proactively networking and seeking internships that aligned with my interest in the field. My strong academic background, combined with a commitment to learning, helped me gain an entry-level process health and safety role where I could keep learning in the real-world.

You completed your NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety in 2017. Can you tell us:

  • Why you chose this qualification?
After graduating as a chemical engineer in 2013, I had built up my health and safety skills and knowledge through my work. By 2017 I was looking for a way to formally evidence this. I decided that the best way to do this and expand my knowledge at the same time was by signing up for the NEBOSH International General Certificate. This qualification would give me a globally recognised foundation in health and safety; equipping me with the tools and credibility to excel in this field.
  • If you enjoyed your studies?
Absolutely. I found the course engaging and practical, with its clear focus on real-world applications. It helped me connect theoretical knowledge with practical strategies that I could implement in the workplace.
  • How achieving this qualification has helped your career?
The qualification gave me the technical knowledge and tools necessary to identify hazards, mitigate risks, and influence workplace safety culture in most workplaces. Achieving this qualification also significantly boosted my confidence and credibility. I found it opened doors to new opportunities and helped me secure roles with more responsibilities.

Since 2022, you have worked as a HSE Supervisor for GS Inima in Oman. Can you tell us about the company and the services it provides, please?
GS Inima is a global leader in water management and specialises in the design, construction, and operation of desalination and wastewater treatment plants. The company is dedicated to delivering sustainable water solutions that address environmental challenges while maintaining the highest safety and quality standards.

The project I have been working on since 2022 is the Ghubrah III Desalination Plant, which is the largest desalinated water concession project in Oman. The plant has a capacity, under normal conditions, of 300.000 m³/day and can produce 315.000 m³/day in periods of demand. Ghubrah III ensures the supply of water to Muscat’s 1,500,000 inhabitants, while preserving the resources of the aquifers.

What role do you hold in the company, and what are your main responsibilities?
When I joined the company in 2022, I was recruited as an HSE Supervisor. However, due to my prior experience and strong communication and interpersonal skills, I have been working as an HSE trainer for the past couple of years. As a HSE trainer, I am responsible for equipping employees with the knowledge and skills they need to maintain a safe and compliant work environment. My responsibilities include:

  • Developing training programs: Designing and customising HSE training modules to address company-specific needs.
  • Delivering training sessions: Delivering engaging and informative sessions on workplace safety, emergency procedures, and regulatory compliance.
  • Assessing competency: Evaluating the effectiveness of training through assessments, feedback, and on-site observations.
  • Updating materials: Ensuring training content aligns with the latest health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Promoting safety awareness: Collaborating with teams to foster a proactive safety culture and enhance employee understanding of best practices.
  • Incident prevention support: Providing guidance on risk management strategies to reduce workplace hazards.

In 2023, you completed the NEBOSH International Diploma:

  • Why were you attracted to this qualification as I understand you had already completed another Level 6 Diploma?

Although I had completed another Level 6 Diploma, I still wanted to do the NEBOSH International Diploma because it offered a more specialised and in-depth understanding of health and safety management. Its international recognition and reputation made it a valuable asset for advancing my career in a global context.

  • What did you gain from studying the NEBOSH Diploma in particular?

The NEBOSH International Diploma provided me with advanced knowledge and practical tools which I use to effectively manage complex safety challenges. It enhanced my leadership skills, broadened my understanding of international safety standards, and allowed me to apply strategic thinking to improve workplace safety systems.

Achieving the NEBOSH International Diploma has given me the expertise and confidence to drive meaningful change in health, safety and environmental management. As an HSE Practitioner I am dedicated to fostering a culture where safety is a core value. Through proactive hazard management, effective communication, and continuous learning, I strive to make workplaces safer and more sustainable so that every individual returns home safe and healthy every day.

What’s next for you in terms of your professional development?
I am now planning to pursue a master’s degree in Sustainable Energy and Safety. This program aligns with my vision of integrating sustainability into workplace safety practices. My goal is to deepen my expertise, take on strategic roles, and drive innovative approaches to health, safety, and environmental management. My hope is that if I do this I can contribute to sustainable organisational growth while addressing global energy challenges.

What do you enjoy most about being a health and safety professional?
I enjoy the opportunity to make a tangible difference in people’s lives by creating safer workplaces. It’s rewarding to know that my efforts contribute to protecting employees and promoting a culture where safety is a shared responsibility.

When you look back at your career to date, what are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the positive impact I’ve made in shaping a proactive safety culture in the organisations I’ve worked with. Successfully reducing incident rates and improving compliance with safety standards are among my key achievements. It is great when the work you do is a driver for positive change.
