How a Diploma can help you dress to impress
Case Study: Sarah Martin - GL Noble Denton
What could be more impressive than a degree from Oxford and a PhD in mathematics?
Well according to Sarah Martin, the answer is a NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. And Sarah should know, because she has been there and done that and now almost has the T-shirt!
Sarah works for GL Noble Denton, part of the GL Group, an independent technical advisor to the oil and gas industry. They help some of the industry’s best known companies reduce risk, meet stringent regulations and increase efficiency across the lifecycle of on and offshore assets and operations.
Safety could not be more important to her employers, because their oil and gas partners often insist on the highest possible standards from those they work with. They seek reassurance that safety is an absolute priority.
“New clients in particular tend to ask if we have NEBOSH qualified staff, and having recently started to study for my Diploma I can see why. The course has already given me a solid foundation in health and safety and its legal requirements.”
Even though Sarah has yet to complete her Diploma, she has already managed to impress clients by achieving the highest mark in 2012/13 for Unit B of the qualification, which covers hazardous agents in the workplace.
“NEBOSH qualifications are extremely well recognised in many industries and my Diploma is already providing more opportunities for me and my employer,” said Sarah. “Gaining the highest mark is giving our clients added confidence that I will complete the qualification to a high standard.”
As an Oxford graduate, Sarah’s academic background is already impressive, but she feels that the NEBOSH Diploma adds a “different kind of credibility.”
“Because it is a vocational course, it reinforces that I have a solid practical knowledge, not just an academic one, so I can be relied upon to apply that knowledge in the workplace.”
Sarah is keen to complete her Diploma as this will also help in her goal towards becoming a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). A NEBOSH Diploma will set her up for the first step in this process, as it meets the academic requirements to apply for Graduate Membership of IOSH.
Health and safety is important as ultimately it helps to save lives and protect people from injury at work. However, it’s important to remember that it can also win business for employers who are willing to set high standards and then demonstrate them
Good luck Sarah. We’re glad you’re already putting your Diploma to good use.
