Tell me about your career so far.
I am a graduate of Plant Science and Biotechnology/ Biochemistry. I currently work as a Health, Safety, Security and Environmental Advisor. My responsibilities include conducting meticulous risk assessments, implementing stringent safety protocols, and ensuring adherence to regulatory standards, safeguarding both human resources and the environment.
What made you decide health and safety is a good career option?
My passion for health and safety started from a personal experience during my final year in college. A fire broke out in our students' accommodation, which was found to have been caused by a power surge. Unfortunately, there was no firefighting equipment or safety measures in place, leading to the complete burning of the building and loss of property. Thankfully, no lives were lost. This tragedy sparked my interest in understanding the importance of health and safety in our homes and workplaces.
How have you been able to use the International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety in your workplace?
This qualification has equipped me with a solid understanding of health, safety, and environmental legislation and has enabled me to ensure compliance with these regulations and standards, minimizing the risk of legal issues and promoting a safe working environment. It has also helped me to conduct thorough risk assessments across various operations and activities in my workplace, helping to mitigate hazards and prevent accidents.
Why do you think it's important to offer a women-only health and safety bursary?
Offering a women-only health and safety bursary is a proactive step towards achieving gender equality and creating safer, more inclusive work environments for all.
