Soumia Hannani is a HSE Engineer for Sonatrach based in Algeria. From an early age she knew she wanted to build a career in health and safety. In this interview, Soumia explains her passion for the profession and shares her thoughts on how to encourage others to follow in her footsteps.

I understand that you chose to study health and safety at university. Has this always been your preferred career path?
I have always been passionate about health and safety. From a young age, I was aware of the importance of creating safe environments, whether it was at home, school, or later in the workplace. This awareness grew to become a clear career goal, so choosing to study health and safety at university felt like a natural progression for me.

For many, health and safety is a second career, but you have chosen it as your first. How do you think the profession can encourage more people to follow your lead?
There are many things we as a profession can do to encourage more people to consider it as a first career. Research suggests that a key motivator for young people entering the world of work is finding a role that gives them a sense of purpose and delivers for the greater good. This is exactly what health and safety is all about. We play a vital role in safeguarding lives, promoting well-being and ensuring working conditions are safe. This has a profound positive impact on individuals' lives. We make a difference and that feels good!
