Whilst at University studying you Geography and Environmental Science degree, you completed a Safety, Health and Environmental internship. Can you tell us a little about this?
Since childhood it has always been my ambition to have a positive impact on the Environment. To realise this dream, I enrolled on a Geography and Environmental Science degree at one of the renowned universities in Zimbabwe and was fortunate to secure a place on a one-year internship programme.

My internship was invaluable and hugely influenced my career path. I observed first-hand how the implementation of an effective SHE management system can prevent workplace accidents, reduce costs and promote sustainability.

I decided during my internship that after I completed my degree, I wanted to pursue a career in safety, health and environmental management. The experience gave me the clarity, confidence and skills to pursue my career goals, values and interests.

You have worked in several industries including manufacturing, oil and gas and mining. How easy is it to switch as a HSE practitioner?
Switching industries as a health and safety practitioner can be relatively straightforward, as the fundamental principles of health and safety are consistent across industries. However, there are certain factors to consider. For example there may be hazards that are more significant or may even be unique to an industry you are considering moving to such as chemical handling in manufacturing or working at height in construction. You may wish to revise or enhance your knowledge of these hazards and their controls as part of your preparations for your new role. Some industries may require more significant adjustments than others, but with dedication and continuous learning, switching industries can be successful and rewarding and is a great way to broaden your experience.

When you look back at your career so far, what are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the contribution I was able to make in one of my previous roles to my employer’s attainment of an international certification - the National Occupational Safety Association (NOSA) 5* star grading. At the time I worked for one of Zimbabwe’s biggest beverage manufacturing companies and it achieved an impressive mark of 96% in the assessment.

More generally, I am proud to be able to help colleagues and team members grow their safety, health and environmental careers and achieve their goals.
