The course was fully subscribed for its 2017 cohort, which begins in September, by mid-March. The University is now already offering places to students for the 2018 intake.

One of two Masters-level qualifications offered by the partnership – the other being a MRes (Masters of Research) – it gives Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) professionals the opportunity to gain a higher level qualification that directly complements their career.

Adam King is one of the successful applicants who will begin their studies later this year. He said: “I have completed two NEBOSH Diplomas and it was at the Graduation for these in 2016 when I heard about the MSc in Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Management. This seemed like the natural progression for me as I always wanted to do a Masters and here was a course that had the backing of NEBOSH.

“NEBOSH sets the bar when it comes to professional qualifications and it seems fitting that I started out my journey with NEBOSH Certificates in 2011 and will, hopefully, achieve the MSc some eight years later.”

Glenn Silburn, who graduated from the MRes course in 2016, added: “My real area of interest is safety culture. It was great to research this subject in depth, and of course the MRes is all about gaining those advanced research skills. The benefits also extend to the workplace, because it will sharpen up your management skills. It will put you in a better place to write that report you’re scratching your head about and will help you put together a well-researched case to back your thinking.”

Now in their fourth year, the degrees have been specifically designed to be flexible to the needs of the working practitioner. The degrees last two years and are studied part-time via distance learning, making them ideal for both UK-based and international candidates. Students can choose to focus solely on health and safety or environmental management – or both – depending upon their area of focus.

The MSc programmes include taught modules on aspects of research methodology and designing a research project, as well as advanced modules on topics relating to health, safety, and environmental management. They conclude with a six-month research dissertation relevant to candidates’ own employment.

The MRes programmes are Masters-level research degrees that incorporate modules on research methodology, literature review, and design of research projects. These lead on to a one-year research project, during which students are able to produce a thesis on a topic that is relevant to their workplace.
