Getting leaders on board: an Intersec seminar preview

Monday, 9 December 2024

Health and safety professionals must get their voices heard; lives depend on it. But the challenge is to be heard amongst the competing demands being made – daily – upon Chief Executives and their C-suite.

Intersec NEBOSH Day Seminar Preview - Andy Shenstone

Andy Shenstone, NEBOSH Chief Executive, will deliver the opening seminar at NEBOSH Day, part of the 26th edition of Intersec at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Speaking on 15 January 2025, Andy will explore the importance of strong communication skills and how to connect with the CEO and other C-suite leaders. In this article, he shares a preview of that seminar…

Understand the destination
The first step in effectively communicating with the C-suite is understanding their long-term vision. C-suite executives focus on the future, often planning years or even decades ahead. To gain their buy-in, you must align your health and safety proposals with their mission, vision, KPIs and strategic goals.

  1. Research: Understand the company’s mission and long-term objectives. This knowledge allows you to frame your ideas as integral parts of their strategic journey.
  2. Craft a narrative: What connects your proposal to their vision? This narrative should bridge the gap between the current state and future goals, demonstrating how your proposals contribute to their success.

Articulate the value
Communicating the value of your ideas from the C-suite’s perspective is crucial. This involves:

  1. Understanding their priorities: Identify what matters most to the executives and show how your solutions address their key objectives.
  2. Highlighting blind spots: Illuminate areas they might not be aware of, introducing new possibilities and demonstrating the value of your ideas.
  3. Appreciating their culture: Tailor your message; avoid health and safety acronyms and phrases which could be confusing.

I am guided by the mantra: answer the ‘so what?’. What is the proposal, why is it a good idea (evidence), what are the costs and what are the expected benefits?

Practical steps

  1. Preparation: Ensure you have a deep understanding of the C-suite’s current challenges and goals, and your subject matter so you can answer questions confidently.
  2. Concise Communication: Keep your presentations and discussions concise. Executives have limited time, so focus on the key points and avoid unnecessary details.
  3. Data-Driven Insights: Use data and metrics to support your arguments. However, avoid overwhelming them with data. Instead, provide clear conclusions backed by evidence.
  4. Next Steps: Conclude with actionable next steps. This shows that you are not only presenting ideas but also providing a clear path forward.

Speaking to the C-suite requires a blend of strategic thinking, effective communication, and emotional intelligence. By understanding their vision, articulating value from their perspective, and evoking the right emotions, you can gain their buy-in and drive meaningful change within the organisation. Remember, it’s not just about presenting ideas; it’s about transforming those ideas into actions that align with the C-suite’s long-term goals.
