NEBOSH offers three separate Master of Research (MRes) degrees in partnership with the University of Hull:
- MRes in Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management
- MRes in Occupational Health and Safety Management
- MRes in Environmental Management
These postgraduate degrees are designed for those who wish to extend their academic achievement beyond the level of a NEBOSH Diploma qualification, in order to further advance their professional careers.
The Masters programmes consist of online distance-learning courses that cover research methodology and literature searches, as well as an advanced research project which is completed at your place of work.

Who is it for?
Individuals
The MRes degrees NEBOSH offered in partnership with the University of Hull are for health, safety and environmental professionals. They build directly upon the high-level knowledge provided by our Diploma qualifications. Developing critical thinking and research skills they provide a firm foundation for those who wish to explore in detail a particular aspect of health, safety or environmental practice, or who wish to pursue doctoral studies.
These qualifications are ideal for Health, Safety and Environment professionals looking for a flexible way to continue their academic studies whilst working.
Employers
The MRes degrees NEBOSH offered in partnership with the University of Hull take the academic status of our Diploma holders one stage further. They support the skills and methods required to conduct academic research related to occupational health, safety and environmental practice.
Employing professionals at this level of academic achievement emphasises how importantly you regard health, safety, environmental performance within your organisation.
What you will learn
What do the courses cover?
In the first year of this two year course, you will cover the following subjects regardless of which MRes option you choose:
- Research Methods
- Literature Review
- Designing Research Projects
Commencing semester 3 of year 1, and for all of year 2, you will then carry out a research project in your workplace, which draws upon knowledge gained from the first three modules. You will formulate, collect and analyse data necessary to examine your research question and produce a dissertation that presents your findings and conclusions in a clear and professional manner.
How is the qualification assessed?
For each module studied in the first year, you will complete an essay assignment of between 2,000 and 6,000 words.
For the subsequent MRes research project, the assessment consists of:
- An online oral assessment (45 mins)
- An online presentation (15 mins)
- A written Research Dissertation of 24,000 words including a literature review of 5,000 words
Entry requirements and exemptions
Entry requirements
NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety/ NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety/NEBOSH Diploma in Environmental Management or equivalent Either a Science or Management-based Bachelor’s degree (2:2) or equivalent (with suitable health and safety and/or environmental content)
Learners will also need to be employed within an industrial or commercial environment in order to carry-out and provide evidence for the extended MRes research project.
Exemptions
There are currently no exemptions available in relation to our NEBOSH Masters programmes.
Where to study
Programmes leading to our Masters degrees are delivered exclusively by the University of Hull through distance learning.
There are two intakes of learners each year in February and September. No enrolment with NEBOSH is required.

What does it cost and how long does it take?
Over the two years we recommend studying for a total of 1,800 hours. This includes a minimum of 12 hours of project supervision face to face or via Skype.
There will also be at least one face to face verification visit from University of Hull, British Council or similar.

Additional Masters Programmes
A number of universities offer MSc programs which accept the NEBOSH Diplomas as a full or partial entry requirement. Some MSc courses may require additional qualifications/expertise, such as a degree, further significant work experience or expect students to complete specific modules e.g. in environmental management.
